How to use Depreciation Calculator

  1. 1Choose straight-line or declining-balance method.
  2. 2Enter the asset's cost, salvage value and useful life in years.
  3. 3See the full year-by-year depreciation schedule.

Straight-line vs declining balance

Straight-line spreads depreciation evenly: (cost − salvage) ÷ useful life, the same amount every year. Declining balance (this tool uses the common double-declining variant) depreciates faster in early years — each year's depreciation is a fixed percentage of the remaining book value, floored so it never drops below salvage value.

Which method to use

Straight-line is simpler and most common for financial reporting. Declining balance is often used for tax purposes on assets that lose value faster early on (like vehicles or computers) — check with your accountant for which your jurisdiction requires or allows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is salvage value?

The estimated resale or scrap value of the asset at the end of its useful life — depreciation only covers the value lost between cost and salvage value, never below it.

Is this the same as tax depreciation (like MACRS)?

No — this covers the two standard textbook methods (straight-line and declining balance). Tax depreciation systems like MACRS use specific IRS tables and conventions; consult a tax professional for tax filings.

Is my financial data uploaded anywhere?
