What is a pip?

A pip ("percentage in point") is the standard unit of price movement in forex. For most currency pairs a pip is the fourth decimal place (0.0001); for pairs quoted in Japanese yen, it's the second decimal place (0.01).

Pip value tells you how much money you gain or lose per pip of price movement, which is essential for sizing positions and managing risk.

How pip value differs for JPY pairs

Because JPY pairs are quoted with only two decimal places, one pip equals 0.01 instead of 0.0001 — 100 times larger in raw price terms. This calculator detects JPY pairs automatically and applies the correct pip size.

How lot size affects pip value

Pip value scales directly with position size: a standard lot (100,000 units) has 10× the pip value of a mini lot (10,000 units) and 100× that of a micro lot (1,000 units). Larger lots mean larger pip value, and therefore larger risk per pip of movement.

Example calculation

1 standard lot of EUR/USD, account currency USD: pip value = 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10 per pip. The same position in USD/JPY at a rate of 150.00 gives a pip value of (0.01 × 100,000) / 150.00 ≈ $6.67 per pip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to enter the exchange rate manually?

This calculator is fully client-side with no external data dependency, so you control the exact rate used — useful for checking a specific trade or broker quote rather than an average market rate.

What if my account currency isn't part of the pair?

Enter the conversion rate from the quote currency to your account currency when prompted. The calculator won't guess a cross rate on your behalf.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. Every forex calculator on this site runs entirely in your browser — nothing you enter is sent to a server.
