Tone vs undertone
Skin tone is how light or deep your complexion is; undertone is the subtle warm (golden/peach), cool (pink/blue) or neutral cast beneath it. Undertone is what really drives which clothing colours and metals (gold vs silver) flatter you — so the tool detects both.
Getting an accurate reading
Lighting matters a lot for colour: use even, natural daylight, avoid heavy filters or coloured lighting, and make sure your face isn't in shadow. The tool flags photos where lighting may have skewed the result.

A dermatology scale (I–VI) describing how skin responds to sun, from very fair (I) to deeply pigmented (VI). It's widely used for skincare and sun-protection guidance.
Why does lighting matter so much?
Skin colour in a photo shifts with lighting — warm indoor light or coloured bulbs can fake an undertone. Even natural daylight gives the most accurate reading.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
