Image Alt Text Checker
Scan a page for image accessibility and image-SEO problems. The checker lists every image and flags missing alt attributes, file names used as alt text, and descriptions that are too long — while correctly treating alt="" as intentional for decorative images.
Enter a URL or paste HTML. The checker finds every <img> on the page and classifies its alt text as good, missing, decorative (alt=""), a file name such as IMG_1234.jpg, or too long (over 125 characters). You get an alt coverage score, counts for each issue, a filterable list and a CSV export.

Why alt text matters
Alt text is read aloud by screen readers, shown when an image fails to load, and used by search engines to understand what an image shows — which is how images rank in Google Images. Missing alt text is one of the most common accessibility failures on the web, and WCAG requires a text alternative for meaningful images.
Good alt text describes the image's content and purpose in a short sentence: “Golden retriever puppy running on a beach”, not “image” or “dog-photo-final-2.jpg”. Include a keyword only when it genuinely describes the image.
Decorative images and alt=""
Not every image needs a description. Dividers, background flourishes and icons next to text that already says the same thing should have an empty alt attribute (alt=""), which tells screen readers to skip them. That's why the checker counts empty alt as decorative rather than as an error — but an image with no alt attribute at all is always a problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should alt text be?
Usually under 125 characters — one concise sentence. Many screen readers read the whole thing, so long paragraphs are tiring to listen to.
Does the checker see background images?
No. CSS background images don't support alt text. If a background image conveys meaning, provide the information in text on the page.
Why don't you show image thumbnails?
Loading third-party images into this page would contact other servers from your browser. Listing image URLs keeps the check fast and private.
What happens to the URLs I analyze?
Your browser can't read other websites directly, so our server fetches the public page once, returns the HTML to your browser, and the analysis runs on your device. We don't store the page, the results or a history of the URLs you check. Private and internal addresses are blocked. For pages behind a login, use the Paste HTML option.
